Story
Chapter 1: The Longing of the Old Self
Ethan Wakefield lived like many—immersed in the glitter of the world. Success, pleasure, praise, and comfort were his idols. By day he strode through boardrooms, trading ambitions; by night he chased applause in smoky bars, chasing souls of others and neglecting his own.
Yet, beneath the surface, there was longing. A whisper: “Is this all? Is there meaning beyond this hollow chase?” He felt disquiet—haunting dreams, guilt after joys, emptiness after indulgence. Books, philosophy, meaningless thrills—none filled the void.
One evening, after a celebration ended in laughter but his heart felt leaden, Ethan stood alone by the window. The neon city stretched below him, each light a promise… and each one empty. In that moment, God stirred—though Ethan did not yet know Him.
Chapter 2: A Burning Conviction
Ethan encountered a stranger—Anna—who TOLD him of a God who sees, who loves, who judges and forgives. Her words were like lightning: “You cannot live for both sin and the Savior.” Something inside Ethan twisted; he recoiled yet was drawn.
That night, the conviction burnt him: that every selfish thought, every pride-filled word, every betrayal of peace harmed more than others—it harmed his soul.
He prayed for the first time—not a prayer of eloquence, but desperation: “If You are real, reveal Yourself to me.”
And God did. Through scripture, through dreams, through Anna’s kindness, through tears. Ethan saw that he was “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), alienated, unable to save himself. But there is hope.
—
Bible Verse:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” —Romans 3:23
Chapter 3: Turning from the Old: Repentance
Repentance means going away. Ethan turned—away from covetousness, from lust, from pride. He confessed. He sought forgiveness.
He remembered Anna’s words: “Change direction. Be born again.” He laid down his desires, his addictions. He fasted. He wept. Each confession peeled off layers of the old self.
God, who is faithful, accepted his broken heart. Ethan saw his sins laid on Jesus on the cross: not just forgiven, but burden lifted.
Bible Verse:
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…” —Acts 3:19
Chapter 4: Baptism in Water
Ethan traveled to the river on a misty Sunday morning. Hearts pounding, he stood in ankle-deep water. He declared before Anna and others: “I believe that Jesus Christ died for me; I believe that He rose again. I turn from my old life; I embrace Him now.”
The pastor plunged him under the waters. Cold embraced him; darkness surrounded him. But rising—he felt reborn. Cleansed. His old self drowned; his new self emerged.
Water baptism: symbol of death with Christ, and resurrection to a living hope.
Bible Verse:
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life.” —Romans 6:4
Chapter 5: The Blood That Washes Sins
After baptism, Ethan knew he was forgiven. He meditated on the blood of Jesus—his sacrifice. No sin too great, no mistake irredeemable.
He recalled Peter’s words—Jesus’ blood cleanses. A flood washed his past: guilt, shame, mistakes—all removed. He could stand, not by his own merit, but by Christ’s.
Bible Verse:
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.” —Ephesians 1:7
Chapter 6: Born of the Holy Spirit
Ethan felt a wind within. Something unseen but glorious—hope, peace, love. He knew: he had been born again—not of water only, but of Spirit.
Desires changed. No longer was he driven by lust or greed, but by love, joy, peace, longsuffering. Isaiah’s voice: rivers in the desert. He saw beauty, mercy, truth.
Bible Verse:
“Jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” —John 3:5
Chapter 7: Living the Spirit of Life
Freed from condemnation, Ethan learned to walk by the Spirit. Temptations came—old friends, old pleasures—but he found strength in Christ.
He prayed. He worshiped. He served. His heart became a vessel of love. Fruit grew: goodness, kindness, faithfulness. Where once chaos reigned, peace took root.
He lived not by sight, but by Spirit—each day renewed, each moment a worship.
Bible Verse:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” —Romans 8:2
Chapter 8: The Fulfillment: Fire of the Holy Spirit
On Pentecost-like morning, Ethan felt flames of divine purpose. It burned—not consuming, but purifying. Fire ignites zeal, passion for truth, compassion for others.
He became a messenger. His transformation attracted others—not through show, but through authenticity. His life testified: grace is real. Jesus is alive. The Spirit empowers.
The fire fulfilled what cold words could not: love in action, power in weakness, joy in suffering.
Bible Verse:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” —2 Timothy 1:7
Epilogue: The Continuous Journey
Ethan knows transformation is not a one-time event but a lifelong pilgrimage. He stumbles, falls—but the grace holds him. He looks forward to the day when he’ll be fully like Christ.
Yet today, he walks as a new creation. The old has gone; the new has come. He lives in Spirit, hopes in Jesus, rests in God’s love.
Bible Verse:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
May this story echo in your heart—may you see in Ethan’s journey the possibility of your own: a turning, a cleansing, a birth, a fire, a life in Christ.
